Santa Claus is coming to town

Just kidding. But Libs Elliott is, and that’s kind of the same thing. Are you excited? Because we are! I reached out to Libs a few months back after I heard so many of you talking about wanting to take her classes at QuiltCon and being put on the waitlist. I learned that she’s from Toronto so wanted to schedule something with her before she had a chance to book her ticket home from Pasadena. Lucky us, she was totally excited at the chance to come to Seattle for a few days.

Libs Elliott

For those of you who are not familiar, Libs uses a computer program called Processing to generate random compositions from simple geometric and traditional quilt block shapes. Her Rebel quilt has been pretty popular on instagram lately. You can read more about her process here on her website – It’s pretty interesting. She posts some pretty cool stuff on instagram too.

Libs will be coming to Seattle February 27-28, 2016, the weekend after Quiltcon, to teach two full day workshops to Seattle MQG members. They will be the same two (descriptions below) that she’s teaching in Pasadena so if you’re on the waitlist or not going to Quiltcon, here’s your chance!

The fine print: Because we want to spread the love and give more of you a chance to take these workshops, we are limiting you to signing up for just one of them. Both classes are open only to Seattle MQG members until February 8, 2016. Should spots remain at that time, we will open it up to non-members and to members who wish to take both classes. Payment is via paypal only and is required at the time of your registration. Your spot is not secure until you have paid so please do not fill out the form until you’re ready to pay – it’s set to only allow a 25 responses per class. Registration is non-refundable but can be transferred if your plans change. I expect a waitlist for both classes so just contact me (Allison) if you register but cannot attend. Your paypal receipt serves as confirmation of your registration.

Now for the fun stuff – what are the classes? And what if you’re really excited she’s coming but just can’t make it to one of the classes? Not to worry, we have you covered too. Libs will be giving a lecture that Saturday evening that is free to all members of Seattle MQG. Yay! The lecture (and classes) will be at Greenwood Senior Center. More details on that later.

Weight of Love Workshop

The Weight of Love quilt pattern is exclusive to this workshop. It is a pattern made up of hex, half-hex and equilateral triangle pieces. It was designed randomly using Processing code and constructed using Y-seams. You will spend this session reviewing and practicing the Y-seam method of piecing, while customizing The Weight of Love pattern with your own selections of solids and prints. All participants will get a good start on the project and leave the class with full pattern instructions and the knowledge required to complete the quilt at home.

Date: Saturday, February 27th, 2016
Time: 11:30am – 6:30pm, including a 1 hour lunch break
Location: Greenwood Senior Center 525 N 85th Street, Seattle WA 98103
Price: $70 for Seattle MQG members only at this time. You need to be a current member to register now and also be a member in good standing on January 31, 2016

Embrace the Chaos Workshop

Using only paper and pencils – no computers required! – Libs will walk you through a series of worksheet exercises that mimic her code. By using controlled elements in a random way, each participant will follow Libs’ steps and end up with – surprise! – a random quilt pattern layout.

Once the layouts are complete, we’ll start to cut up our fabrics and work on block piecing and top construction. At the end of the class, each participant will leave with her/his very own quilt plan and all the knowledge required for finishing the project at home.

Date: Sunday, Fabruary 28th, 2016
Time: 1:30pm – 8:30pm, including a 1 hour dinner break
Location: Greenwood Senior Center 525 N 85th Street, Seattle WA 98103
Price: $70 for Seattle MQG members only at this time. You need to be a current member to register now and also be a member in good standing on January 31, 2016

So, are you still with me? Pick your one class and register now! Please do not register for both, your second one will be cancelled and payment refunded. Thank you for your cooperation on that.

Let me know if you have any questions. This is going to be an exciting weekend! And if you’re just itching to get started on one of her patterns now, she has a few for sale on her site and a link to a free one at the bottom of her patterns page.

  1. There is a lot of work organizing workshops and we’ve got so many great ones coming up. Thank you, Allison, Megan and everyone who’s working to bring these opportunities to us!
